House dust mite allergy is a common cause of allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis. More than 130 million people are affected globally and due to the burden of disease, Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) may be considered in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis.

A key factor to successful AIT in house dust mite allergy is identification of the relevant allergens. The most common specific proteins are Der p 1 and Der p 2.

However, cross-reaction is frequent intra-species (Der p 1/Der p 2 and Der f 1/Der f 2), inter-species (Der p 1/Der f 1 and Der p 2/Der f 2) and between different extracts (e.g. Der p 10/tropomyosin).

ImmunoCAP Allergen Components can help you differentiate between specific and cross-reactive sensitization with the following suggested test profile.
